The Culture in Qatar

Although Qatar has been modernized in a number of ways, it is still a traditional Muslim country. Locals expect the expats to respect their traditions, cultures and religion and act and dress appropriately when in public.

In Qatar, daily life is dictated by the Islamic culture and calendar. Pork products are not allowed to be consumed in restaurants and alcohol is restricted to hotel bars. One of the hardest adjustments to make is that the school week runs from Sunday to Thursday. Friday is the Islamic holy day, which means that most businesses and stores close until the evening. The church of Christ also holds its services on this day.

The Clothing in Qatar

Similar to men in the Gulf region, most local men choose to wear the traditional white robes called thobes. Alongside this, they will also wear a plain white headdress. Some of the local women in Qatar wear black abayas. Some women chose to wear elaborately decorated abayas but this is an entirely personal preference. They also cover their heads with a hijab.

Expat women are not expected to wear a hijab or cover their heads, but they are expected to cover their knees, shoulders and cleavage when in public. Not wearing the correct clothing can lead to you being asked to leave an area, so it’s definitely worth knowing the rules. However, bikinis are allowed at five-star hotel beaches.

Between the months of April and October, Qatar is extremely hot. Unless you’ve previously lived in another country in the Middle East, then nothing will prepare you for this change in temperature. Temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in the summer months.

The winter months in Qatar are pleasant, and it is the best time to enjoy outdoor activities and watersports. However, this drop in temperature can bring with it frequent thunderstorms and flies.
