Like many families, our laundry basket never seems to stay empty for long. Between everyday clothes, school uniforms, towels and bedding, we're constantly putting the washing machine to work. We’re also conscious of the impact this has, and how we can choose more sustainable products and make better choices for the environment. It’s always difficult to know which products are genuinely eco-friendly and not just ‘green washing’.

So when we were asked to try The Green Co. Laundry Detergent GreenSheets™ and their matching Fabric Conditioner GreenSheets™ we were intrigued! Could we really replace bulky bottles or tablets with slim, lightweight sheets?

As we’ve reached the school holidays I’ve been putting them through several loads of family washing. Here’s how we found them.

First Impressions

The first thing that stood out was the packaging. Instead of gaudy, coloured tablets and heavy plastic bottles taking over the utility room, everything arrived in compact cardboard packs that fit neatly on a shelf. They also came through the letterbox which was brilliant. It seems a much more organised way to store laundry products, especially if you're short on space.

The sheets themselves are thin, dry and incredibly lightweight. If you've never used laundry sheets before, they can seem surprisingly small for something that's designed to clean a full load of washing.

How Do They Work?

So with that in mind what was the result? We were sceptical they could take on such messy clothes from our family, but actually using them couldn't be easier.

For the detergent, you simply place a sheet directly into the washing machine drum before adding your clothes. The fabric conditioner is just as straightforward, with a sheet added according to the instructions before starting your wash.

There's no measuring, no pouring sticky liquids and no worrying about using too much detergent. Everything is pre-portioned, making laundry feel that little bit simpler.

I’m sure we always use too much fabric softener as it’s harder to measure, so this feels like you won’t have any waste.

They work by dissolving into a liquid in the machine and can be used in both hot and cold cycles. We’ve used on both types of wash and being in a hard water area we used an additional sheet for a heavier, stained load.

Cleaning Performance

It’s hard to believe something so simple and thin could replace traditional detergent but it’s definitely a like for like switch.

We loved seeing all our laundry come out fresh, clean and smelling incredible. We were worried stains wouldn’t be removed but so far everything has worked so well and no different to using a tablet or liquid.

With tough stains we would probably treat with a stain remover first but we do this anyway with regular washing liquid tablets.

Fabric Conditioner Results

We were also offered to try The Green Co. Fabric Conditioner GreenSheets™ and the combination of both detergent and conditioner worked well. Most importantly our clothes were left feeling soft with a delicate fragrance.

We chose Lavender but they also have Fresh Linen and fragrance-free, if you prefer something less perfumed. We didn’t find the scent overpowering or artificial as can sometimes be the case.

Why I would buy Laundry Sheets

The Laundry Detergent GreenSheets™ seem to be a really easy way to use less plastic and try eco-friendly products. Often it can be overwhelming to try and find the right product or know what to change to. You feel there’s a lot of research needed but these worked so well for us, we’re delighted to find The Green Co.

Beyond the cleaning results, there are a few practical reasons why we will keep these in our laundry routine.

They save so much space. No more bulky boxes of tablets or overly large bottles cluttering cupboards. The slim cardboard packs are ideal if you have limited storage.

They're mess-free and easy to use, no waste, no drips, or accidental spills. Just grab a sheet and start the wash.

Easy to take away, brilliant for holidays, caravan trips, university accommodation or even hand luggage if you're travelling for an extended period.

Less plastic, this is why we were interested in the first instance. We would have been very disappointed if there wasn’t an alternative to regular tablets and liquids.

Are There Any Downsides?

We struggle to find any real downsides. If you live in a hard water area or have a lot of muddy football kits to wash you may need to use an extra sheet.

However, we haven’t found an issue with removing these stains and getting through all those heavy loads despite washing football and Kung Fu kit!

Overall, we've been pleasantly surprised by The Green Co. GreenSheets and pleased we can make a ‘green’ switch without too much effort in our already busy lives.

Another thing which makes me feel good about choosing them is The Green Co. began in 2018 as a high school sustainability project by teenage founders Emilio Rimini and Kieran Chauhan during a Young Enterprise scheme. They started making homemade, low-impact cleaning alternatives to cut down on single-use plastics.

Anyone trying to make laundry simpler, greener and caring about reducing the amount of plastic in the world and our home is someone to support.

We are now looking into the other products available in their shop from cleaning sprays to dishwasher tabs.
