Ensuring Your Child Stays Motivated to Learn While Schools are Closed

In the United Kingdom and many other parts of the World, schools are currently closed, which is quite challenging for both parents and their children. It’s important that, despite your child’s age, they continue to stimulate their brains in a productive and educational way.

If not they could risk falling behind when schools eventually re-open. Parents can help by encouraging their children to continue with various learning activities, which don’t necessarily have to involve sitting at a desk surrounded by books.

An independent day school in Fulham have put together the following guidance to help parents understand how to keep their children motivated to learn during lockdown.

 Encourage Your Child to Read

One great option to keep the family busy in a productive manner during lockdown is to start a family book club.

You don’t necessarily have to read the same book but each evening at dinner you can all discuss the events of your stories.

Reading is fantastic for children because it helps them develop strong spelling and grammar skills, as well as allowing them to explore their imaginations in a relaxing manner.

You could suggest to your child that they write their very own book review once they’ve finished a novel, using plenty of adjectives to describe what they liked and disliked about the book.

Take a Stroll Through Nature

The great outdoors is filled with learning potential, so why not take a walk with your child?

Not only is it great for their physical health, taking a walk through nature will allow you to teach your youngster about different plants, animals and anything else you see along the way.

You can ask them what they know about the different seasons and how they affect the wildlife.

Browse the Web for Online Resources

Technology doesn’t have to be a bad thing in relation to education.

There are actually plenty of learning resources online, including worksheets and educational games.

Most schools have a handy student portal in which children can log in and access work that the teachers have set.

Encourage your child to complete these tasks and lend a helping hand if they need one, otherwise, they will struggle upon returning to school.

Just remember that learning comes in various forms, not just academia. While completing school work is crucial, there are many other ways you can keep your kids mentally and physically stimulated whilst they’re not attending school.
