What are the Benefits of Outdoor Learning for Children?

It is important for young children to be exposed to a variety of different learning environments, to engage their mind, body and soul.

Being stuck in a classroom day after day, hour after hour, will not help your child understand the fact that their learning is applicable to the real world.

Unfortunately, many children don’t have access to a safe outdoor environment where they are able to play and explore freely, which is why it’s crucial that schools offer them the opportunity. A prep school in Middlesex provides more information on the benefits of outdoor learning below.

Primarily, outdoor learning allows teachers to put all of the school’s resources to good use. As a result, they are able to engage and appeal to a range of interests amongst their students.

We all absorb information in different ways; some people prefer to read books while others prefer to use movement and touch as a way of understanding, so outdoor learning is great for engaging different types of learners.

Exploring the great outdoors helps children to develop a sense of respect towards the environment and how the world works outside of their classroom.

They get to learn about plants, trees, birds and insects, as well as how the different seasons change all of these things.

While this is hugely important, one of the key benefits of outdoor learning is the fresh air and exercise that children get when they’re moving around outside. This is great for their physical and mental health and allows them to blow off some steam.

If possible, parents should try and encourage their children to play outside as much as possible.

Try and take them for picnics or walks through the woods so that they are able to experience a world outside of home and school.

If you have a garden, perhaps you could start growing your own vegetable patch or building a bird feeder, to encourage your child to pay more attention to the outside and learn new skills.
