The Surprisingly Simple Diet Shift Behind Faster Weight Loss

A new study has revealed that the key to doubling weight loss might not be in counting calories or carbs, but in focusing on the level of processing in our food. Researchers from University College London found that individuals who ate a diet of minimally processed foods lost nearly twice as much weight in eight weeks compared to those on a diet of ultra-processed foods, even when both meal plans followed the same healthy eating guidelines.

The groundbreaking experiment involved 55 adults with overweight or obesity who followed two distinct eight-week diets. One diet was composed of minimally processed foods like plain yoghurt, oats, and fresh vegetables. The other consisted of ultra-processed foods, which often contain additives like emulsifiers and artificial colourings. Both diets were designed to align with the UK’s Eatwell Guide, showing the difference was not about ignoring national advice.

The results were striking: the group on the minimally processed diet lost an average of 2.06% of their body weight, while the ultra-processed group lost only 1.05%. This finding is significant, as other research has consistently shown that a higher intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of 32 damaging health outcomes, including cancer and heart conditions.

The benefits of the minimally processed diet went far beyond the scales. The study revealed that participants following this plan experienced a significant drop in fat mass, whereas those on the ultra-processed diet did not see a meaningful reduction in body fat despite losing some weight.

Furthermore, blood markers showed notable improvements; triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood, fell more substantially on the minimally processed plan. Participants also reported having better control over their cravings, suggesting that whole foods contribute to greater satiety and help manage the urge to overeat.
