How to use mood lighting to add personality to your home with Neon 87

Disclosure: I was gifted an item from Neon 87 in order to give a thorough review of their products. All opinions are 100% my own.

We recently moved home and now all the unpacking is done we really want to start adding some character to our home. If you're thinking about which sort of lighting fixtures would suit each room? How to add a bit of fun or personality and where to make the most of natural light you've come to the right place.

Which lighting system you will use varies depending on various factors from if you have high ceilings, to if you're looking for energy efficiency. Finding the options which suit your home can be tricky but we've found a great way to make sense of it is to break the lighting ideas down into rooms. This can be done by a lighting designer but there's no reason why you can't manage this yourself.

We've been inspired by the mood lighting available at Neon 87, they are experts in lighting signage for homes and businesses and are a really affordable way to add a quirky light source to the home. Neon 87 have the perfect balance of being international enough (with an office in Santa Monica!) to get wonderful inspiration from their surroundings but also local enough to be found in London's Covent Garden and the beautiful city of Exeter.

So if you've got some big, blank spaces ready for ambient lighting, here's how to make an impact on your visitors and fall in love with your home...

Entrance Hall

Hallway lighting ideas need to take into account getting enough light for practical things, like finding your keys. Or security, so you might have pendant lights to brightly illuminate the space when you first get into the house and need to lock up.

However later in the day, you may decide to incorporate something which shows more about you as a person or family. Maybe you want people to instantly get a great vibe when they enter. You can create more dramatic effects with neon signs, give an air of humour and a little anticipation that what follows is going to be a fun evening.

Where you huddle

If like my family you spend all your time in the kitchen, lighting ideas for this area need to take into account how you live in this space.

Make sure you have adequate illumination on surfaces called task lighting, this is where you'll be preparing food. A good tip is not to have the light bulbs directly over where you will stand. Otherwise, you will be working in your shadow! If you have low ceilings, spotlights can be the most useful in this area.

Track lights under cabinets can work well and stay hidden. If you have the ceiling space you may be able to introduce one of the many modern kitchen island chandeliers for special dinners.

Should you want to create a bar/bistro feel to your kitchen or breakfast nook, lighting ideas like these funky 'Time to Eat' signs would be perfect. They come in a range of colours from warm white light to hot pink or ice blue!

Create a sanctuary or man cave

Making sure you have somewhere for some downtime in your home is so important. If you'd like to be inspired by sanctuary lighting ideas these would normally create a cosy, intimate feel to the room. There would ideally be lots of natural daylight and then a soft glow for the evenings which could be achieved with ornate table lamps.

Whereas if you're itching to have your own masculine space, a man cave might need overhead lighting in case you're doing any hobbies. These are usually smaller spaces so the amount of light might be reduced. Having a combination of ceiling lights and fun LED signs can have a positive impact and be a great space to hang out.

Don't forget the big kids

As my children grow it's becoming harder and harder to decorate their rooms and find something 'cool'. If you’re wondering how to achieve the balance of them not being in a nursery anymore but also not really being a teenager what can you do?

We find giving the walls a fresh coat of paint with a pale shade and then using accessories makes a difference. This means when they change their minds, which will happen, you only have to change bedding and cushions!

So how do you create the wow factor with kids' room lighting ideas? My son loves these mini collection neon lights. There are so many great designs to choose from.

We've gone for the mountain as the Italian Alps are a bit of a home from home for us given my Husband is Northern Italian. My son loves skiing and climbing so this light evokes lovely memories for him.

We hope you've loved these ideas showing how to add mood lighting and character to your home.

We will leave you with one more lighting suggestion to create a little romance.
