Here's How to Give Kids a Fun Summer Right at Home

Besides, people have work, grocery shopping, laundry, appointments, tired parents, cranky kids, and a budget that doesn’t need to be bullied every time the weather gets nice. There are just so many factors that go into all of this here. And another thing to keep in mind, though, kids don’t always need the huge thing. They usually just want summer to feel different from the rest of the year.

They want water, snacks, staying up a bit later, eating outside, getting sticky from marshmallows, and feeling like the normal rules got loosened just enough to make the day feel special. Think back on your summers as a kid, that's what modern kids want too.

The Backyard Carries Most Weight

At least that’s what it should be doing here. But seriosuly though,a backyard doesn’t have to look impressive to become the place kids remember. It really can be as simple as moving lunch outside, putting a blanket on the grass, filling a cooler with drinks, dragging out a few outdoor toys, and letting the afternoon feel a little less scheduled. You see how simple that all is?

You can even get a pool, but ideally, before that, you should check the pool liners (it’s easy to take care of that before the season gets too far in), or you could even get an inflatable pool if your kids are a lot smaller. But you see the simplicity? You don’t spend much money, you’re shaded from the sun, your kids have a blast, and no lines to use the toilet! Besides, though, not every summer day needs an activity with tickets, parking, crowds, and someone crying in the car on the way home.

But the money you save with just having a backyard that offers enough fun really does do a lot here.

Dinner Outside Counts as an Activity

And for the most part, though, that’s fairly relaxing here too. But kids can eat the exact same food outside that they would’ve eaten at the kitchen table, and somehow it feels more exciting. They get to look at different scenery, which alone makes it fun. So, be it hot dogs, pizza, sandwiches, fruit, chips, whatever is easy, it all feels more like summer when everyone is barefoot, and nobody cares too much about crumbs (unless you’re worried about a pest infestation).

You can even barbecue if you want; kids especially go crazy for that! You could even get a fire fit, tell stories around the fire, and toast some marshmallows for s'mores. It’s so simple, but it's little memories like this that kids cling to.

Make One Night Feel Different

The whole weekend doesn’t need to be a giant adventure for the kid either; it could be a Friday night or even just a Saturday night. For example, maybe on a Friday night, you get a project and a sheet out and watch a movie on the patio. Sure, you could have watched it in the living room, but now it’s outside, and you're all eating popcorn and s'mores, you can’t get more fun than that.
