Why Costa Rica is Perfect for Family Travel
My sister first recommended Costa Rica to us. As a Geography teacher, gap year traveller and volunteer she's seen a lot of the world! For her Latin America stands out for its biodiversity, and family-friendly atmosphere. With easy access from major international airports in Europe and the United States, short travel time between destinations, and a wide range of activities, it is a great place for international travel with children.
From lush rainforests and cloud forests to beautiful beaches along the Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast, the country offers diverse ecosystems packed with abundant wildlife. Expect to see howler monkeys, colorful birds, and even sea turtles in their natural habitat.
If you have very young children, 2 years and under this probably will suit them when they are a bit older, or you need to think about not taking part in the hiking options and more rigorous activities. This is the norm for this age group and we found the same with our children. Now they are off up mountains and we can't keep up!

Exploring Rincón de la Vieja National Park with Kids
One of the most fascinating places to visit for children and adults alike, is the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. This is where the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is located. If you are looking to add something a little different to your Costa Rica itinerary, this park in the northwest is a great spot for family adventures.
Located within an hour drive from Liberia, it is one of the best parts of the country for geothermal landscapes and outdoor fun. You can easily explore with a Rincón de la Vieja self guided tour so you can take the day at your own pace and choose which attractions suit your family.

Why Visit Rincón de la Vieja with Family
This area offers a mix of adventure and accessibility, making it a good option for both younger kids and older kids. You will find bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and an active volcano environment that feels like stepping into another world. The scenery is different from the lush rainforests of other regions, giving your Costa Rica trip more variety.
It is also less crowded than places like Manuel Antonio National Park, which can make for a more relaxed experience with young children.
Best Things to Do
Easy hiking trails: Several trails are suitable for little kids and younger children, especially near the Las Pailas sector. You can see volcanic activity safely and up close. Famous for steaming fumaroles, mud pots, and small craters. Visit the stunning the Cangreja and Escondida Waterfalls!
Wildlife viewing: Keep an eye out for monkeys, birds, and other animals in their natural habitat. It's a great experience for children.
Natural hot springs: After a morning hike, relax in natural hot springs at Agua Termales in the Santa Maria Sector. You will see a contrast in color between the 2 areas, where the white and green rocks mark the hot springs due to the minerals in the water and you will see dark grey, brown, and black rocks marking the cool river.
Water slides and river tubing: Adventure parks in the area offer water slides, tubing, and horseback riding, which are perfect for older kids.
Horseback riding: A fun way to explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

How Rincón de la Vieja got its name
The Legend of Rincón de la Vieja dates back approximately 600 years, tracing its roots to the pre-Columbian era in Costa Rican culture.
The name Rincón de la Vieja means The Old Lady’s Corner based on the story of a Princess (Curabanda) of a tribe who possessed exceptional healing skills. She fell in love with Prince Mixcoac from another tribe and her father, fought with him and threw him into the volcano! She was consumed by sorrow and became a recluse living in the forest and healing those she came into contact with. Some claim to hear her sorrowful echoes in the mountain caves. This is how Rincon de la Vieja earned its name.
San Jose
Most trips begin here due to arriving at international airports. While not the main attraction, it is a convenient starting point before heading to your next stop. It has a mix of culture, history and some shopping. Top places to visit in our opinion are the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the vast collection at the Jade Museum, founded in 1977 by Fidel Tristán Castro. The museum contains the world's largest collection of American jade.
However, if like most people you are visiting to get back to nature, there is a lot to discover. Also on your list should be:
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Perfect for outdoorsy, nature loving families and for brilliant wildlife viewing. The cool climate is also a nice break from the heat. Here you can have a tour with local guides. People visit for the walks through cloud forests. These are circuits of trails through paths and across bridges through the canopies of trees and amongst a mist that allows thousands of species to survive.

Manuel Antonio National Park
One of the best places for families combining beaches and wildlife. Located on the Central Pacific coast, this area encompasses rugged rainforest, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. It’s well known for the vast diversity of tropical plants and wildlife, from three-toed sloths and endangered white-faced capuchin monkeys to hundreds of bird species.
The great thing with this park is the trails are gentle and offer shade which suits holidays with children. There are also beaches within the park with calm waters.
Tortuguero National Park
Another fabulous spot an a unique destination on the caribbean coast is the Tortuguero National Park.
This is a protected wilderness area as its beaches are famous nesting grounds for sea turtles, including endangered green turtles. The park's freshwater waterways are navigated by boat, shelter spectacled caimans and river turtles.
Recommended for children age 8 and upwards this is a bit of an Amazon experience as there are also caimans and boat tours are 2-3 hours which don't suit younger children.
Best Time to Visit Costa Rica with Kids
Understanding the seasons is key when planning your Costa Rica itinerary, this will make or break your experience so do take into account, what the weather will be doing and what your children can cope with. Generally, The dry season is December to April. This is the best time for sunny days, beach visits, and easy travel on Costa Rican roads. Ideal for younger children. The rainy season is May to November. You should expect little rain in the mornings and heavier showers later in the day. This is a good option for fewer crowds and lush landscapes. Spring break is popular but can be busy, so plan early if traveling during that period.
Getting Around
There's lots of options for transportation and it's good to use a mix of these so everyone is still fresh for the main activities.
If you are comfortable driving, you can hire a rental car. This makes your days completely your own for day trips and but be aware remote areas will have challenging roads. It is possible to book private transfers, private shuttles or family tours. This is the best option for families who want comfort and less stress. You can have a local guide take you around and not worry about getting lost!
Should you need car seats; bring these with you. They are not always guaranteed. The other fun option is a golf cart! These are common in beach towns like Santa Teresa for short distances.
Overall a Costa Rica family vacation offers the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and education. If as a family you like to explore and get twitchy if sat by a pool all day then this is for you. From abundant wildlife to safe and welcoming people, it’s a destination where families can connect with nature and each other. With thoughtful planning and a flexible schedule your Costa Rica trip can truly memorable time for everyone.
