Why is Reading so Important for Children?

Reading is a vital element of any child’s learning journey. It’s one of the first things they learn how to do when they start school and something that is included across all subjects every day.

Not only that, but it can also be extremely enjoyable. Many people actually consider reading to be a form of entertainment, like watching TV. It’s a way to unwind at the end of a busy day.

Arguably, reading is much more beneficial for a child than spending hours on end playing with digital devices. It’s a timeless hobby and one that increases a range of skills beyond entertainment. I have teamed up with an independent school in Kent to explore these advantages in detail.

One of the main benefits of reading, which is often overlooked, is that it’s fantastic for boosting general knowledge. Even fictional novels will help your child to learn about various historical events, like World War II for instance, as well as the variety of traditions across the world.

General knowledge is vital in lots of ways and will even help your child with socialisation as they explore these concepts with their friends and family.

Regardless of the type of book your child enjoys, reading is sure to help them develop a generous vocabulary that will serve them well when communicating and writing. This will help them perform well in school, as well as in the future when they are applying to universities or jobs.

Another benefit of reading is that it improves a child’s ability to concentrate. This is necessary in lessons and exams, as well as in work meetings and other, more personal aspects of life.

If you’re wondering how to get your child into reading, start by ordering a few different books online. Encourage them to explore different genres and make sure they are age-appropriate so that they don’t find them too difficult to read.

Show an interest in your child’s reading by asking them about the story and what they liked or disliked. You could even encourage them to write a review if they’re old enough!

We have read to both our children since they were babies. Bedtime stories are a comfort. Reading to your child cultivates a joy of storytelling, develops their imaginations and helps them with creative writing.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is to help them to read.
