Road Trip Survival Tips for New Parents

You might think that going on a road trip with a baby might be a crazy idea, but in fact it might be less challenging than dealing with boisterous toddlers and teenagers. Babies just need to be fed and comfortable, and they need some caring. Toddlers will need discipline and constant entertainment. If you are determined to see more of the world, you might want to know that many babies seem to fall asleep as soon as the car starts moving. Below you will find a few tips on how to make the most out of your family trip.

Stay Flexible

No matter how well you know your baby’s daily schedule, it is likely to change once you hit the road. Avoid waking them up before they would normally do on their own to get off, or distracting their schedule. Avoid feeding them straight before you get in the car, as it can get messy. Babies might get frustrated sitting in the car for too long, so you will have to stay flexible when planning your family road trip and be prepared to stop for a walk, something to drink and eat, or to change your baby’s diapers.

Plan Stops

Apart from the emergency stops, you will also have to schedule regular breaks, as your baby might get tired of looking at the inside of the car. Take your buggy with you, and go for a walk, so they can get some fresh air and a new scenery. This will help them settle and feel more secure. Plan the stops for the times when you usually feed and walk them.

Book Services and Baby Friendly Facilities

When you are arranging accommodation, you will have to make sure that you are staying in comfort and don’t have to squeeze into small spaces. You might want to take turns going down to the spa, or getting a massage. Check out the facilities offered by the hotel and read reviews. If you are looking for a hotel in Custer, South Dakota, make sure that you read the customer blogs and check the ratings before you book.

Have Some Adult Time

Spending time with your baby might be the best time of your life, you still need to take a break. If you can get them to sleep for a while, you can book a table at the hotel’s restaurant, or even take them with you to the bar, so you can enjoy some quiet time.

Be Prepared for the Emergencies

Traveling with babies never goes smoothly. You might need to have a couple of changes of clothes in the baby bag, just in case. If they are not able to settle in the new cot provided by the hotel, you might need to take turns to take them out for a walk. Get some simple painkillers and don’t leave their favorite toys and comforters at home.

If you would like to take your baby on a road trip, you need to be prepared, flexible, and ready to change your route and plans.
