5 Tips for Teaching your Child a Language

Interview with Will Collier of Little Linguists Library

The initiative has been running for 21 years and the next one will take place on 1st March 2018.

Why should I learn a language - Post Brexit?

You may think that I became a language lover when I married a man with a different nationality to me. The truth is my favourite subjects to study at school were always English language and foreign languages. I was fascinated by travel and being able to communicate. After a school trip to Rouen where myself and some other students were insulted in English by German school children (Yes they insulted us in our own language which they could speak pretty well!) I knew I could not cope with only knowing my own language.

I recently asked other mums who are raising Bilingual Children if they could share their experiences, good and bad. I asked for tips and most importantly challenges, as we all know there are many!

Firstly I was amazed and delighted at how many of you came forward. However I also noticed that as usual us mums do worry if we are doing things the correct way or should have done approached this type of learning differently.

Children start to learn languages at school in the UK age 7 years old. This is a bit of a revolution as until 2015 the starting age was 11.

We all pick up languages easier the earlier we start, (The best time is ages 0-5!) After that it becomes more effort but it's still absolutely possible to master it.
